Aegittonggpul: The Korean Herb Whose Name Means "Baby Poop Flower"
The Most Memorable Plant Name in Korea
In Korea, there is a wildflower with one of the most unforgettable names in the plant kingdom — Aegittonggpul (애기똥풀), which translates directly as "Baby Poop Plant."
Snap a stem, and you will immediately understand why. A bright yellow liquid oozes out — the exact color that gave this plant its charmingly blunt Korean name.
But behind the funny name lies a plant with a surprisingly deep history in Korean herbal tradition.
What Is Aegittonggpul?
Greater Celandine (Chelidonium majus) is a biennial herb belonging to the poppy family. In Korea it grows wild along roadsides, hillsides, and forest edges, blooming with cheerful yellow flowers from April through August. It grows 30–80cm tall, with deeply divided feathery leaves and clusters of small four-petaled yellow flowers.
It goes by several other Korean names too — Kkachi-dari (까치다리, "Magpie Legs") for its branching stem, and Jeotpul (젖풀, "Milk Plant") for its milky yellow sap.
A Plant Known in Both East and West
What makes Aegittonggpul particularly fascinating is that both Korean and European herbal traditions independently recognized this plant's properties — long before modern science connected them.
In Korean traditional herbalism, it is known as Baekgulchae (백굴채, 白屈菜) and has historically been used for pain relief, respiratory conditions, and digestive complaints.
In medieval Europe, Greater Celandine was considered one of the most important medicinal herbs, used for eye conditions, skin ailments, and liver support.
Two cultures, one plant, centuries of shared intuition.
Important Caution
The entire plant contains toxic alkaloids. The yellow sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. This plant should never be consumed without professional guidance.
In traditional contexts, trained herbalists used carefully prepared forms — never the raw plant.
